UPSET SPECIAL

WHAT A GAME !! ONLY IN AMERICA BABY !! This just might have been the best Super Bowl that I've had the pleasure of watching. A close came all the way, with the final outcome not really assured until the final seconds had ticked off the clock. And in one of the greatest upsets in pro sports history, the heavily underdog NY football Giants came out and smacked around the New England Patriots and in the process captured their 3rd Super Bowl ring.  And yes, they did smack the Pats around like they had not been smacked around all season long. En route to an undefeated season and a date with immortality, the Patriots laid, on the most important game of the year, the big shit.  Hats off to the Giants for their game plan. Their front four on defense took it to the Pats and had Tom Brady running for his life. He was hit and sacked and pressured yesterday like he had not been pressured all year, and it showed. The "greatest" team ever had no answers, the smug, little football genius of a coach had no answers either. The Pats were 12 point favorites, pretty much a lock. But you know what, you still have to play the game! And the Giants did just that.......they played smash mouth, hard nosed football, and the Pats looked like panzies in the process.

The spread on the game was only the 3rd largest in Super Bowl history, behind the 17 point spread in Super Bowl III (Colts/Jest) and the Pats first Super Bowl win vs. the Rams in '02, 14 points. But this should go down as the biggest upset of them all because the Pats were on the verge of a 19-0 season and immortality, the greatest team ever, undefeated, etc.  The Pats set offensive records for the ages during the regular season, but the old adage that defense wins championships held true last night. The Giants put the pressure on and did not let up until the final seconds ticked off the clock. Brady was running for his life and Randy Moss was a huge non-factor......a NON FACTOR!

Now we can all sit back and watch the Spy-gate crap unfold. Who knows what that will bring, but it will not take away from one of the best games I've ever seen and one of the greatest upsets that I've ever seen. Not quite on par with the 1980 Olympic hockey team mind you, but huge non the less.

The image of Eli brings back memories of another iconic image from Super Bowls gone by:

Joe Willie Namath orchestrated what could arguably be the greatest upset in football history at Super Bowl III against the Baltimore Colts. But Eli Manning took it to the next level in my estimation. He silenced a lot of critics on Sunday night and in the process, took his underdog Giants to the top of the football universe. 18-1 is a hell-of-a record during an NFL season. But without the Super Bowl title, the Pats are looking at it as what might have been. Those 18 voctories do not mean squat right now, they are meaningless, an empty recored. So Tom, brush yourself off and go back to your GQ lifestyle. Coach Bill, go back to the drawing board or to film school, and guys, figure out what went wrong. You'll be back again, there's too much talent on the Patriots roster to suggest otherwise. In the mean time, take a look at Eli Manning and learn, again, what it takes to win the big games.

1972 Miami Dolphins..........Stilll.........the ONLY team in NFL history to go undefeated in the regular season and bring home the Championship. Somewhere in South Florida the champagne corks are popping all over again.

Thanks...........CG

..It was a pretty intense game especially for me cuz I didn't REALLY care who won. But I'll tell you man , not knowing who was gonna win all the way down to the closing seconds was cool. Eli did come into his own this season.
