SHAKE, RATTLE and ROLL !
I don't know about you, but all of this recent seismic activity here in the Midwest has got to stop. This is tornado alley for goodness sake! Another little tremor shook our neck of the woods this morning, a minor temblor that registered a magnitude 2.7 on the scale. Not much really, but still enough to cause a stir and bring the phone calls in to the local radio stations. This one, however, was not centered 100 miles from here, but right in CG's backyard in Fenton, MO. Too close to home really. Back on April 18 we had a "real" earthquake, 5.2 magnitude, enough to give the people here in the Midwest a little wake-up call. We need to realize that our area IS prone to earthquakes, many of them, and some of them can be and have been considerably large and devastating over the years.
One look at the colored map above shows you that, outside of Alaska and the west coast, we are the Hotbed of seismic activity in the country. The New Madrid fault sits on our doorstep and is the cause of one of the most powerful earthquakes to ever strike the continent. You can check it out here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Madrid_Earthquake
We always here about the great San Francisco earthquake in 1906, the one in the Bay Area in 1989, Mexico City in 1985, Northridge, CA in 1994, Kobe in Japan and so on. You never really give it much thought living here in the Midwest that you are actually primed for a "big one" to hit. It's jut a matter of time and the recent activity may point to bigger ones to come unfortunately. You just hope we're prepared when it does arrive. One only needs to look at the tsunami in South Asia back in 2004 as proof positive to what devastation an earthquake can cause. That wall of water was the direct result of an earthquake that struck deep under the Indian Ocean. Hundreds of thousands dead and many more left devastated for life.
Yeah we don't like to think about it here, but maybe we ought to NOW. A tornado is one thing, but earthquakes, geez. Thank goodness we don't live near the Coast, a hurricane could be next.
Just a thought. CG
