American Comedy Genius...Will Smith

It's been a long while since we've had an installment of "American Comedy Genius" on America Matters. Tonight that is our subject.  I have kind of been all over the map with my selections of my favorite funnies. From the classics cinema greats to the more recent television greats. One of the most recent ones I hit on was Tim Allen and Home Improvement. Home Improvement re-runs have become a staple dose of comedy in our home. A sit-com that was on the tube at the same time as Home Improvement and The Cosby Show was a great little show called "The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air". A new school rapper in Will Smith that had become famous for his clean lyrics and hit number one despite the popularity of "gangsta rap".  It worked. Smith landed himself a television show. A great one at that.

The beauty of a great sitcom is the cast...They have all be equally funny in support of the main player (Will Smith) and in the Fresh Prince Of Bel Air it was a perfect mix.

Let's take Carlton for example.... Not the main player. FUNNY!

Carlton (Alfonso Ribeiro) was a great "second" to Will Smith.  It was similar in the way of watching the crew of the Carol Burnett Show (who will be featured soon here)in some aspects because the fun in making the show is so evident and they fed off of one other and while watching you could see them trying not to laugh and keep their lines straight. On top of the great writing and new and "fresh" wit of Smith and the cast that surrounded him, it was alway a great laugh.  I've always gauged American Comedy and it's genius by a few certain rules.... If you can laugh out loud, even when you're by yourself. If kids and family can laugh together...and does it make you laugh everytime you see it?  That is when comedy creates a laugh and when comedy heals.

Will Smith and The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air IS one of those shows. Will Smith and his popularity and being a top paid actor today was born in this show. Rightfully so. Comedy Matters.
